Old vs New NERV Logo in You Are (Not) Alone

nerv-old

The Evangelion logo. It is something known around the world. And has the power to instantly let people know your a fan. Then during the production of the first movie in the Eva reboot, they announced that there would be a new logo for NERV. They would be replacing the maple leaf with an apple. Big news for the fans.

Anyways, the logo was one of those things that I actually looked for when I sat down to watch You Are (Not) Alone for the first time. And I found it surprising that I was seeing the old logo more often than the new one. I’ve been saying for a while now that I was going to make a post on this movie. And my plans were that in this post I would mention the logo thing. Well five failed attempts later and I was finding that the only thing I actually wanted to talk about was the logo. So here is a collection of screenshots from the movie showing everything I saw the logos on.

evalogo1

The first time we see the new logo is the entrance they use to get into NERV.

evalogo2a

Shortly after that, the first time we see the old logo is on the ID card Shinji has.

evalogo1a

You can also see the old logo on the upper right of this screen shot as part of the bracing for Unit 01

evalogo2b

And on the top of the seat inside the entry plug.

evalogo2c

It can also be spotted as Unit 01 is being lifted up to the magnetic rail to launch.

Wow, running total has it at 1 new logo and already 4 old logo.

evalogo1b

The old logo is also on the Eva elevator gate when Shinji is first launched in unit 01 .

evalogo4a

As they are inspecting the remains of the angel, the laptop has the old NERV logo on it.

evalogo5a

The rising of Tokyo-III finally shows off the new logo again.

evalogo2

It can be found on the Tokyo III buildings as well.

About time they showed it off a bit more, it was looking a little one sided there. Running total: New 3, Old 6

evalogo3

But the storage unit that Unit 01 arrived in for fight #2 has the old logo.

evalogo4

As well as the container with the spare assault rifle.

evalogo5

Then when Shinji is brought in after going for a little stroll. on the back of the wall is the old logo again.

evalogo6

We also see the old logo on the floor in the flashback when Unit 00 goes berserk.

evalogo7

This is a neat one as it looks like the two logos are mixed on Rei’s new NERV card. Her old card looks exactly the same though.

evalogo8

Once the doors opened the new logo can be seen, poor thing hasn’t been getting nearly the same amount of screen time.

evalogo10

YAY, the new logo appears again as they get ready to attack the final angel of the movie.

evalogo11

I think that’s the new logo on these guys as well….. stupid not having super highdef.

Running total puts new logo at 6, old logo at 10 and combined logo at 1.

evalogo12

More of the old logo, this time it’s in Central Dogma

evalogo13

And another shot of the old logo this time on Unit 00’s shield

evalogo14

Spotted the old logo again on the side of the railway cart used to transport Unit 01 up to the firing point.

evalogo15

More old logo this time on the fancy photon rifle.

evalogo16

But we see the new logo on some of these random boxes.

evalogoonparamid

It’s also incredibly hard to see but there is a red mark on the pyramid before the blood hits it. I believe it to be the old logo but this REALLY needs some HD footage.

Final count has it at 7 times showing the new logo. 14(maybe 15) for the old and only 1 combined. It’s possible that I’ve missed some …. I really need a HD version of this movie already, HURRY UP and license this for the US already! And PLEASE give it to us on BR.

newnerv2

I still find it entertaining that the two logos interchanged like this as often as they do. I also had to go find a pic of the combined version after seeing it on Rei’s card. And of course I WILL be watching movie two and comparing notes on what logo appears on what.

I just stopped by your blog and thought I would say hello. I like your site design. Looking forward to reading more down the road.

  2. X says:

where did you get the hi-res of the mixed logo?

    • bluestreak2 says:

I honestly can’t remember. I think I found it using Google’s image search. Fun to look back on this post though, after having watched the Blue Ray version, there are many more scenes with the logo that I missed back then.

  3. […] One website has already tracked instances of the old logo vs. the new one in the first Rebuild film. Surprisingly, the old logo beats out the new one for appearances, roughly 2-1. What the site does not point out, however, is that the rationale for one logo appearing versus the other is entirely non-existent. The newer logo does not appear only in places where it would have been added in-story more recently, and the old logo does not appear only in places where it appeared in the original series. […]

    i LOVE your post!

no wonder when i watched the movie i had a nagging feeling i hated the new logo, but i couldnt point out exactly what was different about it until i googled. no wonder, most of what we saw was the old one!

i dont like the new logo… i hv no emotional attachment to it, but all the merchandise flogs the new logo.

Did you ever point that the leaf would be from a fig tree rather than a maple tree ? ^_^

Don’t remember about maple stuff in the Old Testament. Ho, maybe I should read it first !

A fig leaf and an apple both upside down… What are they trying to say ? 😀

  7. […] here I am attempting to make a comeback to the blogging scene. (Even if my most popular post was a capture post of all the Nerv logos in the first remake […]

    *spoilers!*
It’s definitely a fig leaf. The lobes are all wrong for maple. Plus, if you are thinking about it in the sequel theory, it makes sense to think of the “first” run on the universe being an attempt to cover up a failure that happened and feeling shame. The apple adds in the complexity of humans, or Nerv, realizing that they gained knowledge in order to make the mistake, and can use that knowledge to fix it?

Crazy rant but would love a response!

    • bluestreak2 says:

Yep, it’s a fig leaf, my mistake, thanks for pointing it out.
I like the idea that the apple was added to represent knowledge, but it still doesn’t make sense that there would still be so many of the original logo stamped on everything.

I’m pretty excited to see what they do with the third movie, maybe they’ll give us some answers on what Kaworu has been doing on the moon.

I can actually explain the mixing of the logos I think. It looks like at one point in past NERV rebranded and a lot of their long-term stuff didn’t get repainted with the new livery, but shorter term stuff (boxes, ID badges, etc.) got it already. Happens a lot in the airline industry, you’ll see planes with mixed liveries.
